Designer Spotlight: Becca Feeken

download (21)Becca Feeken comes from a long line crafty folks who made things out of necessity; for Becca, it’s a lifestyle. Boredom was not in her vocabulary as a child. She longed to learn how to make things and crammed something to do in every waking moment.

She blends a love of sewing, embroidery, needlecrafts and jewelry-making into a passion for gift making and paper crafts. Although she has embraced the digital age, she advocates creating legacy by making touchable lovely handmade things that show your style, show case your personality, follow your heartfelt traditions and bear the marks of your loving words. Becca’s philosophy is “creating out of a spirit to give, breathes life into the roadmap for my incredible crafty journey.”

What’s your design/craft story? ie. How did you get started?
I left a corporate job to be a caretaker to my husband. We found ourselves homebound with a lot of time on our hands so I gathered all the craft supplies I had been collecting for years and began to create. I found a following by introducing unique ways to use dies, punches and other tools. My style developed from a flat style to one with layers and often 2 or 3 dimensions.

Define your design style in 1 word.
Classic, romantic, elegant. Yes, that was three!

How has your design style evolved over the years?
I love and have worked in every style from trendy to mixed media to grungy to cute. My home style is a clean, romantic classic look that leans toward elegant but can be used for the everyday. I’ve looked back over my body of work and nothing makes me happier than to pull out something that I made ten years ago, that I could give to someone today and it still be in style. Just like the classic black dress that never goes out of style, I lean toward classic lines and elements that stand the test of time.

What’s the most fun thing about designing your own product line? What’s the hardest thing?
The most fun thing about my own product line is that I’m designing things that I haven’t seen before but always wanted to have something with an a-ha factor where people nod and think it will be a great addition to their stash. The hardest thing is the wait from design inception until the products actually hit the market. The anticipation is gut-wrenching!

Who did you have in mind when you designed it?
I have in mind the every day crafter, who wants to easily create something perfectly lovely and have it still be in style years from now. I design graceful classic items that blend well with all styles and can be used for a range of occasions. I love factoring in the ability to mix and match so I always design each product so that it can be used multiple ways.

What/who inspires you? Why?

I’m absolutely inspired by life! It’s a road map with many surprises but there is inspiration around every corner. I scoop it up from everyday things, the color of the sky, the cover of a magazine just arrived in the mail, tools in the hardware store. Inspiration is everywhere.
