Modern Essentials Inspiration | Quilled Thank You Card Trio with Niki

Hello, and happy Friday! Niki here today from cardstoq.com, and I have a set of thank you cards to share with you. Each one features elements from the Modern Essentials collection, which is now one of my most favorite releases from Spellbinders. The sets coordinate with each other so you can mix and match to suit your project, and they are perfect for creating a professional, clean edge on your cards.

I do a lot of floral projects in my crafting, whether I stamp, freehand draw, paint, or create some form of paper sculpture. Making the floral elements is easy, though. The struggle always comes with how to frame the designs, and how to add a sentiment. If you’re not blessed with beautiful handwriting, word stamps sets, and the Glimmer Hot Foil sentiment plates are a godsend. I’m not going to lie, I’ve collected all the sentiment Glimmer plate sets!

Quilled Abstract Art

For the first card, I made a bunch of coils using 7” pieces of quilling paper. I choose teal, turquoise, mint, and white because they’re my favorite colors. A good tacky glue is best when you’re working with quilling paper. I used a fine slotted quilling tool to make these coils, but I would recommend learning to hand quill if you’d like to give it a whirl. You can find more info on that here.

To make a beautiful frame for the quillwork, I chose the largest plate from the Essential Glimmer Rectangles Hot Foil Plates. I used it to create a dotted frame with some Pewter Hot Foil, then die cut it with the largest rectangle from the Nestabilities Essential Rectangles Etched Dies Set.

The quilled coils need about 1/8” of space to be tucked under sentiment strip, so I doubled up some foam squares and adhered the lovely foiled sentiment that I made with the More Sentiments Glimmer Hot Foil Plates set. To finish up, I added a few sequins for a little bit of sparkle.

Quilled Roses

My inspiration for the second card was those framed bunches of paper roses you see vinyl artists decorating for weddings. The card below has thirty little folded roses held in place with tacky glue, made from 1/4” wide quilling papers.

There’s no proper length of paper when you’re making these, you go until the flower is the size you want. I have a little clip on Instagram on how to make these roses here, but for those, you do need a slotted tool.

As with the first card, I again chose the largest plate from the Essential Glimmer Rectangles Hot Foil Plates to create a dotted frame with some Pewter Hot Foil, then die cut it with the largest rectangle from the Nestabilities Essential Rectangles Etched Dies Set.

I chose another sentiment from the More Sentiments Glimmer Hot Foil Plates, but this time I adhered it across the top of the card and arranged the roses around it.

Quilled Flowers

For the third card, I decided to go with a landscape orientation and decorate the sentiment with flowers.

I used the same framing technique as I did for the first two cards and again adhered the foiled sentiment strip with doubled-up foam squares.

I created two sunflowers, four fringed daisies, and a little orange flower for good measure, and arranged them around the sentiment with glue. Fringed flowers are made with 3/8” wide paper that is snipped before it is rolled, then fanned out. The sunflowers are made with marquises, which are the same coils as the first card, except pinched on opposite sides. The petals of the big sunflower, though, are rolled from 23” strips.
