Glimmer Hot Foil Three Ways | Spellbinders Live

Join Kim Kesti in the Creative Classroom as she experiments with three different ways to use the Glimmer Hot Foil System to create beautiful Christmas cards featuring the Holiday Florals Hot Foil & Die Set.

The Holiday Florals set is part of the new Christmas Traditions Collection. The set includes hot foil plates to create a poinsettia, sprig, berries, and leaves plus coordinating dies to cut out each shape.

Kim’s first card features traditional hot foiling on Poppy Field cardstock. Kim uses a beautiful specialty foil called Starburst. It gives an extra sparkle on hot foiled projects and it looks stunning on this poinsettia!

For today’s second card, Kim uses watercolor paper and Mermaid Markers. Mermaid Markers are dye-based watercolor inks, in easy-to-use water brushes, and they come in 12 beautiful and vibrant colors. Kim uses Starfish and Seaweed on today’s project. Using a water brush filled with plain water, Kim brushes water onto a large clear block. Next, she drops Mermaid Marker onto the water. She turns a sheet of watercolor paper face down onto the color for her “ink smooshing” technique. Watch to see how she creates a gradient of color going from light to dark.

Next, Kim foils the poinsettia in silver foil on the dry watercolor paper. In today’s video you’ll see how simple the hot foiling process is. We love the way this beautiful poinsettia looks on the vibrant watercolored paper. After foiling, it’s simple to add the coordinating dies to cut the foiled images. Kim shows off the foiled and die cut poinsettia on a color blocked slimline Christmas card with patterned paper from the Holiday Traditions Paper Pad.

Want to see one more way to use Glimmer with watercolor? A third option is to hot foil the poinsettia on plain watercolor paper (before adding color) and then add ink or paint with a paintbrush, painting in the image. It’s so much fun to see how three different techniques give this poinsettia a totally different look.

Kim Kesti’s video was fun and I was so happy to view how to use my newly purchased Jane Davenport’s 12 dye-based watercolor ink water brushes. Love them and the technique in the video provided me the opportunity to try them out. Worked beautifully!
