Designer Spotlight: Seth Apter, Creative Layering

Mixed media for me is all about creative layering, so I decided to make a piece of art that combined elements from different dies and a variety of materials. This way, I am putting my own creative spin on the artwork and am sure to have something different from everybody else.

I love a textured background, so I chose a piece of hand painted paper from my stash that I ran through the Platinum Machine along with my Gridiron Embossing Folder. To highlight the textured pattern that was created, I sponged the raised surface with Midnight Blue StazOn ink. I also added ink to the edge of the embossed paper. To give this piece a more substantial look, I adhered the background to the surface of a piece of book board that I had previously covered with hand painted paper in a contrasting color.

I chose a different sheet of hand painted paper to which I added detail by randomly stamping my French Text stamp using Midnight Blue and Spiced Chai StazOn ink pads.

I ran this paper through the Platinum Machine with both my Drip Drop and my Take Flight die sets. I stacked and glued together the two largest die cuts from each set and added some Midnight Blue StazOn ink to the edges to create a contrasting border and a sense of dimension.

For additional layers, I first ran the Take Flight die through the machine a second time without the inside circle using a sheet of gold foil from the Gilded Life Foil Pack. Using the medium sized die from my Robo Ring set, I then cut darker, painted paper creating both a circle and a loop.

Next I glued all the pieces together to create the main element of the artwork. I also outlined the letters in the word Fly with a gold gel pen to make them pop.

I love incorporating text into my work, so I created a label using the medium sized die from my Robo Bar set and two contrasting colors of hand painted paper. I added the word ‘œbelieve’€ using gold metallic rub-ons.

Next I took all the components and glued them to the background surface.

Having layered multiple die cuts from different die sets, I now have a one-of-a-kind artwork. Hope you are inspired now to make one of your own.
